Burdfield’s in April

Have you seen the recent cost of fuel per litre recently, up at Five Oaks?  I worked out that it would  cost me , in my little van, about 15p per mile plus my time to go shopping, other than at my local shop.  If you take this into consideration, shopping local is by far the most convenient way to shop.

On a Thursday, we have the fresh fish man, Rex, come up from Hastings, and a little van that sells artisan breads.    A good quantity of our quality fresh fruit and vegetables is delivered and we always manage to price them less than the supermarket.  Other local producers deliver during the week and we bring produce in from our own farm on a daily basis, when we can.  If you like Avocado Pears, we have some lovely large ones for just £1 each.  Our whole garlics are £1 each.  Other products, such as our cakes, marmalade, jam, coleslaw and pizza are made on the premises, using all the lovely ingredients from our shop.

Have you tried our delicious home made fruity bread pudding yet?

In the Tea Room, our home made meals are always popular, eat in or take-away, seven days a week.

In Billingshurst we are fortunate enough to have four banks (if you include Santander at Fowlers Estate Agents), an excellent hardware shop, a real bakery and butchers and countless other gems including the excellent Lions Book Shop.  Parking is NOT an issue if you have a blue disk for the Library Car Park (we sell these) or pay for a ticket in the other car park.

We have a small stock of Organic Fair Trade Green & Black’s Easter Eggs along with various sized simnel cakes.

We’ll be open over the four days of Easter.

February 2012

BURDFIELDS in FEBRUARY

The Seville Oranges have been bought and the marmalade made, so what shall we do in February?   Firstly we shall be thinking about Valentines Day and then usually we would be thinking about pancakes and Shrove Tuesday, but this year it falls on the 21st.  We will be making sure we have a stock of buckwheat flour for the pancakes.

We stock a traditional crepe mix made with natural ingredients made with buckwheat flour – JUST ADD WATER.  So simple.  The buckwheat gives the crepe its unique flavour and light fluffy texture which compliments both sweet and savoury fillings.
www.quickcrepes.com  has some fantastic savoury and sweet recipes and even a tutorial video.

Forced rhubarb is the seasonal favourite, and, as usual, we have plenty of recipes for its use.  I always like to add a sliced banana to the rhubarb crumble, with a bit of ground ginger mixed into the topping.

We have already started sewing the seeds on the farm to grow lettuces, which should be ready to sell in the shop in April, and other vegetables and salads.  Our own rhubarb should be available by April too.  We hope to be growing even more varieties this year, weather willing.

Our herbs and spice selection is forever growing, should you need something more unusual.  If we don’t stock it, we’ll certainly try to get it in. Just ask.  Don’t forget we can get most ingredients in all sizes because we buy them in sacks from 25Kg to 500g.    Let us know what you’d like.

ON THE SUNDAY, 19TH FEBRUARY, WE HAVE THE ITALIAN MARKET ARRIVING IN THE LIBRARY CAR PARK from 9am
until about 4pm
